Lapis Lazuli (short: Lapis): History and Spiritual Significance
The mysterious lapis lazuli, or simply called “lapis”, is a deep blue mineral mixture that is reminiscent of a sparkling starry sky at night due to its glittering gold grain.
Even in ancient Egypt it was sacred as the “stone of kings” and was placed with the dead pharaohs as the most precious grave deposits. For example, it was a large part of the jewellery of the most famous death mask of the ancient Egyptian king “Tutankhamun”. Above all, the azure stone symbolised “beauty and protection” even then.
Its name “lapis lazuli” comes partly from the Arabic “azul” and partly from the Latin language, “lapis”, which means overcast “sky” and “stone”.
In esotericism it is said that it increases the need for friendship, love and partnership, promotes sincerity and optimism and improves one’s own credibility. Fears and blockages are also said to be resolved with the help of its energy.
In astrology, it serves as an auspicious birthstone for the zodiac signs Aries, Virgo and Sagittarius.
